MDCMS - the complete Change Management System for iSeries

MDCMS provides every function necessary for handling application changes on iSeries systems. All of the following processes are incorporated into one powerful, inexpense and highly flexible product:

Project management

  • Central online tool for the business user or team leader to enter project or issue requests.
  • Requests tracked by programmer, status, due date, etc...
  • References all objects modified, or commands performed, for request.
  • Project information automatically syncs across all systems
  • API for easily interfacing the MDCMS Project Manager with external project management tools.
  • Report generator providing various online, paper or electronic reports.

Analysis management

  • MDXREF is included free with MDCMS so that the developer can quickly navigate through the objects of an application.
  • Search entire database for specific fields or field attributes.
  • Comprehensive journal analysis for finding and reporting data transactions.
  • Powerful comparison tools to search for differences at the library, object or data level of an application.

Source and Object management

  • Reservation system for source and objects to be modified. No risk of version conflicts in a team environment.
  • Developer workspace within MDCMS for all necessary editing, compiling, testing and reporting needs.
  • Rules easily set by administrator so that the source and objects are always handled in the correct manner.
  • All iSeries object types, including IFS streamfiles, message descriptions and data records are handled by MDCMS.
  • Objects in libraries delivered from external vendors can be quickly selected for migration into your environment.
  • When a file is to be modified, all dependant files, programs, queries, etc, may also be automatically selected for modification or recompilation.

Installation management

  • Pre-Installation Checker to warn of any conflicts, missed objects, etc...
  • Previous versions of source and objects are archived (up to 99 generations per object). If necessary, part or all of an object package may be rolled back at any time in the future.
  • Data in modified files are mapped to new format.
  • All necessary object authorities are applied.
  • Commands may be defined to run before or after the installation is complete.
  • If an installation can not be completed, it is automatically rolled back and detailed error reporting is provided.
  • Scheduler for hands-free installations while users are not on the system.
  • Environments may be set to require approval from an authorized user before an installation may occur.

Distribution management

  • Simultaneously distribute object packages to unlimited iSeries machines or partitions via FTP, SNA or tape.
  • Allows for differences in operating system versions.
  • Selectively send only source, only objects, both or neither.

Audit management

  • All functions in MDCMS are individually secured by MDSEC to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Comprehensive logging performed each time an installation occurs. The detailed information may be viewed online or a customized report may be created by the report generator.
  • Detailed audit reporting for object modifications made outside of MDCMS. Now, you can be secure in knowing every change made to your applications at the data and object level.
  • MDCMS has been certified Sarbanes-Oxley compliant. If your IT shop needs to quickly conform to the new regulations, MDCMS will remove one large obstacle for you.

News

March 9, 2010: Secure Usage of DDM on System i with MDSEC 6.6!

DDM stands for Distributed Data Management
and provides a simple means for accessing and updating data on a target iSeries (System i) using programs running on a local iSeries system.

MDCMS, for example, uses DDM for synchronizing Project and Workflow information as well as for tracking object migrations across systems. If DDM is allowed to be used without sufficient security measures in place, then a significant risk exists that data could be read and manipulated by otherwise unauthorized persons. The DDM Security feature of MDSEC can be used to exclude unauthorized users as well as to manage which Data objects may be accessed or manipulated via DDM.

October 19, 2009: A large Swiss Bank with local presence in Europe, Latin America, Middle East and Asia has now licensed MDCMS to manage and distribute updates for its Olympic Banking applications.

July 6, 2009: A new MDCMS version, containing functionality to handle Open Platform objects using the graphical Eclipse IDE, is currently in intensive Beta testing at a large customer installation.
Thanks to the valuable feedback resulting from the close cooperation with the customer, some functions have been further enhanced. The test progress is proceeding well and the new version is expected to be released during Q3-2009.

October 27, 2008: Midrange Dynamics is currently enhancing the MDMCS functionality to handle non-iSeries objects and files. That means MDCMS can fully handle the receipt, distribution and installation of software objects in multi-platform environments (e.g. a MIDAS delivery containing COBOL/RPG programs to be installed on the iSeries as well as e.g. Java objects to be installed on a Windows or UNIX server). The whole process is under control of MDCMS including auditability (Sarbanes-Oxley compliance) and archiving of the changes.

The new MDCMS version will be released in 2 steps: In a first step the additional multiplatform object handling functionalities will be available in the classical green-screen look on the iSeries. In a second step, planned by the end of 2008/beginning Q1-2009, the Eclipse plugin (graphical client user interface based on the widely used Eclipse/WDSC technology from IBM) will be officially released after successful testing.

May 6, 2008: We are pleased to announce the French and Italian translations of the Midrange Dynamics website to provide better service to our Italian- and French-Speaking customers.
